What is a Reciprocating Saw?
A reciprocating saw is a power tool, and does much more than cut down trees.
Its an all-in-one tool that can take the place of several others.
you might buy one at a home improvement store for about $100 $200 for good one.
More often than not, I hear this tool referred to as a Sawzall.
This is a trademarked brand name of the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company.
So while (technically) not all reciprocating saws are Sawzalls, the terms are used interchangeably.
How Do Reciprocating Saws Work?
The saw has a blade that moves back and forth in a rapid, push-pull motion.
What Can You Cut with a Sawzall?
you’re free to cut through wood (including tree branches), metal, PVC, drywall .
just about anything besides rock.
Why Do I Need a Sawzall?
First, a large handsaw cant fit into small areas, and thats where this saw comes in.
It is used for shorter, tough-to-reach cuts.
Its also electric, and uses a push and pull motion to cut, which it does quickly.
Once you learn more about this tool, youre definitely going to want to have one on hand!
But there are several differences:
Can you cut straight with a reciprocating saw?
you could, but its going to take some practice.
you’re free to help yourself with practice on a sample piece of wood.
Id also recommend drawing a line if you feel you need something to follow.
Winging it isnt always the best idea if youre looking for straight lines!
Can you cut plywood with a reciprocating saw?
you’re free to, just as long as its not too thick.
For most plywood, you shouldnt have any problems.
Then cut through that.
When beginning to cut, squeeze the trigger and allow the saw to gain full power.
Allow the tool to do most of the work!
Most of the guiding and controlling will be done by the non-dominant hand at the front of the saw.
Only slight pressure is typically needed, as youll let the saw do the work.
If too much pressure is applied, it can cause the blade to bend.
Changing the Blade
Changing the blade is relatively easy depending on the age of your saw.
The older reciprocating saws used an Allen wrench to loosen and tighten the blade within the shoe.
Other newer models involve pressing the two buttons and removing the shoe before removing the blade.
Lets talk more about the shoe, now that were in that area of the tool.
In order for the shoe to assist in this, use it as a fulcrum.
In other words, rest the shoe on a hard surface as you guide the blade in to cut.
Practice.Buy scrap wood before you tackle any home improvement project.
Would you rather mess up a piece of wood as opposed to your wall?
Ace Hardware has a great video about how to use a reciprocating aw I embedded it below!
